TRAI defines Internet connections with download speeds less than 512 kbps as narrowband, while download speeds faster than 512 kbps as broadband. Broadband connections were the majority in India with an 87% share. TRAI had also recommended redefining the minimum broadband speed to 2 Mbps.
TRAI reports that there are a total of 604.2 million Internet connections, including both wireline and wireless connections, broadband and narrowband. A majority of these Internet connections are on mobile . Most people are switching from narrowband to broadband off late.
Railways has been providing free WiFi via RailTel at all of its stations except the halt ones. It started from Mumbai Central and in 46 months has extended the service t0 5,500 stations. RailTel has roped in partners like Google, Tata Trust, PGCIL for some parts of the project and also got funding from the Department of Telecom USOF for 200 stations. WiFi is being provided under the brand name Railwire - the retail broadband service of RailTel
To attract first time Internet users in remote parts of the country, the digital kiosks are planning to offer consumers access to a catalogue of over 4,000 movies and other entertainment content. Common Service Centres have been given the mandate to offer last mile Internet connectivity through BharatNet to homes through a system of pre-paid monthly coupons. These services can be either through Wi-Fi or direct to home fibre.
